Northhaven
Service

Canada's federal economic system, run end-to-end.

Express Entry is Canada's flagship federal economic immigration system. We run an end-to-end strategy from eligibility audit through Invitation to Apply to Confirmation of Permanent Residence.

What is Express Entry

One pool. Three programs. Periodic invitations.

Express Entry is the application management system that governs Canada's three federal economic immigration programs. Eligible candidates enter a single ranked pool. IRCC issues Invitations to Apply to top-ranked candidates through general or category-based draws.

The three programs

FSWP · CEC · FSTP — pick the right door.

Each program has its own eligibility floor. Once admitted to the pool, all three are ranked together by CRS.

Federal Skilled Worker (FSWP)

For foreign nationals with skilled work experience outside Canada.

  • Minimum one year continuous skilled work experience in past ten years
  • Language testing in English and/or French
  • Educational credential assessment (ECA)
  • Pass mark of 67 on the FSW selection grid (out of 100)

Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

For foreign nationals with skilled work experience inside Canada.

  • At least one year of skilled Canadian experience in past three years
  • No settlement funds requirement
  • Natural fit for PGWP holders and TFWs
  • Faster processing for complete applications

Federal Skilled Trades (FSTP)

For foreign nationals with experience in qualifying skilled trades.

  • Two years of full-time skilled trades experience in past five years
  • Job offer or certificate of qualification from a Canadian province
  • Language testing required
  • NOC qualifying skilled trades occupations
How CRS works

Boosters that move candidates from “in the pool” to ITA.

The 1,200-point Comprehensive Ranking System rewards a small set of additional factors disproportionately. These are the levers we pull.

+50
Qualifying job offer (most NOC TEER 1, 2, 3)
+600
Provincial nomination (PNP)
+15
Sibling in Canada (citizen or PR)
+50
French CLB 7+ (max combined boost)

Boosters stack within published limits. Senior management roles under NOC 00 with a positive LMIA receive 200 points instead of 50. French language ability also unlocks category-based draws with materially lower cut-offs. We engineer the file to capture the most efficient combination for each candidate.

Express Entry is the application management system that governs three of Canada's federal economic immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Canadian Experience Class, and the Federal Skilled Trades Program. Candidates who meet the threshold for any of the three are placed in a single pool and ranked against each other using the Comprehensive Ranking System. Periodically, IRCC issues Invitations to Apply to top-ranked candidates.

The Three Programs

Federal Skilled Worker (FSW)

For foreign nationals with skilled work experience outside Canada. Requires a minimum of one year of continuous skilled work experience in the past ten years, language testing, and educational credential assessment. Candidates are scored on a separate six-factor selection grid (out of 100, with a pass mark of 67) before entering the Express Entry pool.

Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

For foreign nationals with at least one year of skilled work experience inside Canada in the past three years. CEC candidates do not need to prove settlement funds and do not face the FSW selection grid. This is the natural pathway for post-graduation work permit holders and TFWs who have completed a year of qualifying Canadian experience.

Federal Skilled Trades (FSTP)

For foreign nationals with experience in qualifying skilled trades occupations and a job offer or certificate of qualification from a Canadian province or territory.

How CRS Works

Once a candidate is in the pool, CRS ranks them on a 1,200-point scale. Points come from four broad categories.

  • Core human capital (up to 500 with a spouse, 460 without): age, education, language proficiency, Canadian work experience.
  • Spouse factors (up to 40): partner's education, language, work experience.
  • Skill transferability (up to 100): combinations of education + language, education + foreign work experience, foreign + Canadian experience, certificate of qualification.
  • Additional factors (up to 600): provincial nomination (600), qualifying job offer (50–200), French ability, Canadian study, sibling in Canada.

Recent draws have produced cut-off scores ranging roughly from the high 400s to the mid-500s for general draws, with category-based draws (healthcare, STEM, French language, trades, transport, agriculture) often running lower. The exact threshold varies draw by draw.

Boosters That Move Candidates From "In the Pool" to "Receives an ITA"

Three boosters do most of the work:

  • Provincial nomination. A nomination from a province through an Express Entry-aligned PNP stream adds 600 CRS points. This is, in most cases, a guaranteed ITA.
  • LMIA-supported job offer. A qualifying offer with a positive LMIA adds 50 points (most NOC TEER 1, 2, 3 roles) or 200 points (NOC 00 senior management).
  • French language ability. Strong French (CLB 7 or higher) adds 25 to 50 additional points and qualifies a candidate for French-language category-based draws with significantly lower cut-offs.

Northhaven's CRS strategy work focuses on which booster is reachable for a given candidate at a reasonable cost, then engineers the file to capture it.

Typical Timelines

  • Profile creation to ITA: highly variable, from days (with PNP nomination) to many months (without a booster).
  • ITA to PR: IRCC service standard is six months. In practice, complete files routinely process in 4–8 months.
  • PR to landing: logistics, scheduled by the applicant.

Express Entry on its own is not a 4–6 week pathway. The 4–6 week timing applies to LMIA-supported and government-contracted work permit lanes; the Express Entry application that follows operates on IRCC's standard service rhythm.

What We Do

Eligibility Audit

Program eligibility, language test strategy, education credential assessment, NOC selection, and an honest CRS estimate.

ITA Strategy

The path from current CRS to receiving an ITA. This may include LMIA pursuit, PNP application, French language acquisition, or category-based draw positioning.

Application Bundle

Once an ITA is issued, applicants have 60 days to submit a complete electronic application. We assemble the full bundle — police certificates, medicals, proof of funds, work experience letters, reference letters — to file-ready standard.

COPR and Landing

We handle correspondence with IRCC, respond to procedural fairness letters, and walk clients through Confirmation of Permanent Residence and the landing process.

What to do next

The Eligibility Quiz generates an estimated CRS score and a recommended pathway in under five minutes. If your score is already above recent cut-offs, that is a green light. If it is below, the quiz will tell you which booster is most efficient to pursue. To talk through a specific case, contact us.
